Start core listening without creating an account

Skipping account creation matters for reasons beyond convenience. Every field an app doesn't ask you to fill in is a field it can't lose in a breach, sell, or misuse later, and podcast listening is a use case that rarely needs an identity attached to it in the first place: you are searching a public catalog and playing public audio feeds published over open RSS, the same way any podcast client does. Starting instantly, without an email, password, or verification step, also means the app has to earn continued use through the listening experience itself rather than through a sign-up funnel it has already gotten you past, and it means there's simply less personal data sitting anywhere for anyone to mishandle later.

In practice, a long list of features work fully without ever creating an account: browsing charts and categories, searching the catalog, subscribing to any number of shows, building and reordering a queue, adjusting playback speed and using the sleep timer, jumping between chapters on supported shows, downloading episodes to that device for offline listening, and using CarPlay or Android Auto. None of these are time-limited previews, watered-down demos, or interrupted with sign-up prompts mid-use. If you install the app on one phone and never touch the account flow, you get the same playback experience as someone who did sign in; the account layer sits alongside core listening, not in front of it.

What genuinely needs an account is anything that has to follow you across devices or across a reinstall: syncing your subscriptions, queue, and playback position between an iPhone and an Android phone, or between any two devices you own; restoring a Brain subscription purchase after switching phones or reinstalling the app; and enforcing per-person usage limits on quota-based AI features so the quota belongs to you rather than resetting every time someone reinstalls the app on a new device. These are specifically the cases where the app needs to recognize "you" as a person, independent of whichever device happens to be in your hand at the moment.

Without an account, your library lives entirely in a local, on-device database the app manages itself, and nothing about it is uploaded anywhere unless you opt into sync. That also means it's tied to that one device: uninstalling the app, wiping the phone, or losing it loses that subscription list and history unless you had signed in and synced first, since there's no server-side copy to restore from. The honest takeaway is that a single-device, casual listener loses nothing by skipping the account entirely, while anyone who splits listening across two devices, replaces phones every year or two, or wants an AI quota that travels with them rather than resetting will find the few seconds of signing in pays for itself the first time they switch devices.
