What cross-device sync covers, and what it requires
Signing into the same free account on two phones syncs the state of your listening, not just a list of shows. That includes your playback position in every episode you have started, your queue order, your subscription list, and per-show settings like playback speed. What it does not do is duplicate downloaded audio files across devices: downloads are local to whichever phone or tablet you saved them on, so picking up an episode on a second device that only has it queued, not downloaded, will stream that episode rather than pull the downloaded file across from your other phone.
Sync requires creating a free account; without one, the app works fully for local listening but each device keeps its own separate state. Once you are signed in on both, the handoff between iPhone and Android is genuinely two-way: start an episode on an iPhone during your commute, open an Android tablet at home, and it resumes from the position you left off, same episode, same speed setting. There is no platform lock-in on which device leads; either one can be the active listening device at any given moment, and the other simply catches up the next time it connects.
Sync works on a last-write basis: whichever device most recently reported a position or queue change is treated as current, so if you pause on your phone and then, minutes later, open the tablet and skip ahead, the tablet's action is what other devices pick up next. This occasionally means a very recent change on one device gets overwritten if you jump to another device before the first sync completes, though in practice this is rare with normal listening pauses. The data synced is limited to what is needed for playback continuity, meaning position, queue, subscriptions, and speed, not device contacts, browsing activity, or anything unrelated to your podcast listening.
