Most “Apple Podcasts alternative” pages rank a logo parade. The useful question is narrower: what survives a switch, and what is Apple-only chrome you should expect to lose.
What you keep
Open RSS shows still exist in any client that reads a feed. That is the catalog. Podcast Index and the public web are the proof, not a store screenshot. After import, follow the same titles in The Podcast App.
What you may lose
Apple-native channel subscriptions, some Home Screen widgets, and Apple’s purchase UX. Apple ships transcripts for many shows — this page does not pretend otherwise. Those system transcripts stay in Apple. Play position, downloads, and queue do not ride along in an OPML file.
Why people still leave
They want the same queue on a Pixel. They want OPML they can export again next year. They want unlimited offline downloads without a paywall. They do not want a second ad layer from the client — banners, feed spots, injected pre-rolls. Host ads in the episode file are a different layer.
When to stay on Apple
You live on Apple devices, you use Apple channel subscriptions, and you like the system player plus Apple Podcasts on the web. That is a coherent product. An alternative is for a different constraint, not a dunk on the default.
Switch path
Export on a Mac if you can. Rebuild on iPhone if you must.
Do this before you delete the Apple library. Downloads in Apple stay in Apple until you pull the same episodes again.
- Mac first. Apple Podcasts on macOS can export the library. Save the OPML. That file is the only portable list Apple officially gives you.
- iPhone is weaker. Public Apple support we reviewed — including episode downloads — documents offline files on Apple devices. It does not document a listener OPML export on iOS. Third-party export or a manual rebuild is the honest iPhone path. Do not invent a hidden Apple button.
- Import into The Podcast App. OPML in, subscriptions follow. History, queue, notes, and Apple purchases do not. Full steps on switch and OPML export.
- Re-download offline. Unlimited offline downloads are on the free player. Confirm each file finished before you leave Wi-Fi. Airplane mode will not complete a partial episode. See listen without Wi‑Fi.
- Then compare car playback. CarPlay on iOS. Android Auto phone projection (browse, play, skip, steering-wheel). Android Automotive OS — a head unit with no phone — is not this product.

What this page will not invent
Apple documents downloads and automatic downloads. Claiming Apple cannot go offline is false. Claiming The Podcast App invented transcripts is false. Claiming a secret Apple OPML button on iOS that we could not find in public docs is false.
We do not invent SoftApp extras: no Starter Pack, no fake “cross-device library clone” of Apple’s purchase locker, no Wear-shipped player, no Snipd replacement, no absolute ad-free, no unlimited free Brain. Cloud sync of listening state is a Premium story when it exists — it is not the reason to leave Apple, and it is not offline.
