Pocket Casts alternative: keep the catalog, simplify the client

Pocket Casts is a mature power-user podcast app — sync, web and desktop access, folders, bookmarks, and paid organization tools. The shows are still RSS. An alternative is for a different constraint: a free everyday player first (subscribe, queue, unlimited offline, OPML), iOS and Android without paying for core listening organization, no app-inserted ads, and optional Premium Podcast Brain when AI is useful — not when you only need headphones.

How we tested this as a Pocket Casts alternative

What we checked on our side of the switch, and what we deliberately left to Pocket Casts’ own documentation.

What we checkedWhat we foundCheck it yourself
Bringing a Pocket Casts export inPocket Casts exports OPML (see Sources). Our importer accepts standard OPML 2.0, flattens folders into one list, and skips invalid or private-network feed URLs with a count in the import summary.Import; compare the count to your feeds.
What stays behindPlay position, downloads, filters, bookmarks and folders are not in an OPML file — theirs or anyone’s.Open your export in a text editor.
What we do not claimNo synced web or desktop twin of Pocket Casts, no folders or bookmarks parity. Our browser player samples episodes; it is not a desktop client. The job is a free everyday player on iOS and Android.Try the browser player; it streams, it does not sync.
Free core, literallySubscribe, queue, stream, unlimited downloads (cap code deleted August 22, 2026), OPML in and out — without an account or a paid tier.Skip sign-in; the Downloads screen has no counter.
AdsNo ad SDK since March 9, 2026. Host-read ads inside a file still play. Smart Ad-Skip is a listener tap on supported shows, never automatic. No tracking prompt; tap skip inside a mid-roll on a supported show.

The actual job

Keep Pocket’s power when you need it. Change the starting job.

Most “Pocket Casts alternative” pages rank a feature dump. The useful question is narrower: what survives a switch, and what is Pocket power-user chrome you should expect to leave behind.

What you keep

Public RSS shows via OPML. Listening habits you rebuild in a simpler queue in The Podcast App after import.

What you may lose

Pocket web/desktop workflows, folders/bookmarks/organization chrome, and Plus/Patron-gated tools. Play position, downloads, and queue do not ride along in an OPML file. This page does not invent Pocket Plus/Patron prices or storage caps — check Pocket’s docs.

Why people still leave

They want free core listening without paid org unlocks. Unlimited offline without guessing tier boundaries. Optional AI memory without living in a power-user control panel. No second ad layer from the client.

When to stay on Pocket Casts

You use web/desktop daily, folders and bookmarks are the product, and Plus/Patron already fits. That is a coherent power-user stack. An alternative is for a different starting job, not a dunk on Pocket.

Switch path

Export OPML from Pocket Casts before you tear down the library

Do this before you delete the Pocket library. Downloads in Pocket stay in Pocket until you pull the same episodes again.

  1. Export first. In Pocket Casts: Profile tab → Settings → Import & Export OPMLSend email or Save file. That is Pocket Casts’ own OPML export guide, re-read September 12, 2026 — if the menu moves, trust their page over ours.
  2. Import into The Podcast App. Settings → Manage Subscriptions → Import Subscriptions. OPML moves public RSS subscriptions, not history, queue, downloads, bookmarks, or folders. Full steps on switch.
  3. Verify niche and auth-walled feeds. Some feeds OPML may skip; follow them again if needed.
  4. Re-download commute episodes on Wi‑Fi. Unlimited offline downloads are on the free player. Confirm each file finished before you leave Wi‑Fi. See listen without Wi‑Fi.
  5. Rebuild only what you still need. Do not expect a 1:1 power-user clone of folders, bookmarks, or web/desktop.

OPML moves subscriptions only. Spec: OPML 2.0.

Product-true money bar

Free player, unlimited offline. Premium is Brain.

If a comparison table implies Premium unlocks offline or that The Podcast App is a drop-in Pocket web/desktop twin, it is describing a product we do not ship.

Unlimited offline on free

Download as many episodes as the device will hold. Premium does not unlock offline. Premium does not expand offline. Soft AI caps are an allowance, not a download lock.

No app-inserted ads

No banners, no feed spots, no player pre-rolls from this client. Publisher audio already in the RSS file still plays. That is not “ad-free.” Details on no app-inserted ads.

Premium ≠ the player

Podcast Brain is optional: Ask, Ideas, Recall, Signals, Synthesis Radio on eligible transcript-backed listening. It is not a folders/bookmarks substitute claim. The queue, speed, sleep timer, chapters, and OPML work without it.

Honest bounds

What this page will not invent

Do not invent Pocket Plus/Patron prices or storage caps — point to Pocket’s docs. Do not claim The Podcast App ships a full Pocket web/desktop twin. Do not invent absolute “ad-free” audio or unlimited free Brain.

Host-read mid-rolls inside a show file still play. OPML moves subscriptions only. Premium is Podcast Brain, not a folders unlock.

If you want the Apple default or Overcast’s Apple-platform craft, use Apple Podcasts alternative, Overcast alternative, compare, or best podcast app 2026. Start at home if you want the product, not the switch.

FAQ

Pocket Casts alternative questions

No — it is a different client for the same open RSS catalog. Keep Pocket Casts if you want web/desktop access, folders, bookmarks, and advanced organization. Switch if you want a podcast-first free core player with OPML you control, unlimited offline downloads on free, and a client that does not insert its own ads. Host-read mid-rolls inside a show file still play.

Yes. In Pocket Casts go to Profile → Settings → Import & Export OPML, then Send email or Save file (Pocket Casts’ own support guide). Import in The Podcast App via Settings → Manage Subscriptions → Import Subscriptions. OPML moves public RSS subscriptions, not listening history, queue, downloads, bookmarks, or folders. Full steps on /switch.

Yes. Unlimited offline downloads are free. Premium is optional Podcast Brain / AI, not a download unlock. Soft AI caps are not an offline metric. Device storage and what you queued are the remaining bounds.

No. Premium does not unlock or expand offline. Offline stays on the free player. Premium is Podcast Brain — Ask, Ideas, Recall, Signals, and Synthesis Radio on eligible transcript-backed listening. It is not a Pocket Plus folders unlock.

The Podcast App does not insert banner, feed, or player ads. Host-read mid-rolls already in the episode file may still play. That is not ad-free audio. This page does not invent Pocket Casts’ own monetization.

Those Pocket Casts organization and multi-surface workflows do not transfer with OPML. After import, use The Podcast App’s queue and downloads on iOS/Android. Rebuild only what you still need. Re-download offline files before you leave Wi-Fi.
