This is not a forever top-10 of the same chart fixtures. True crime splits into two jobs. Mixing them in one queue is how people abandon both.
Closed series
One story, told in order, with an ending. You download the season, you finish it, you stop. Serial season 1 still sets the bar. Up and Vanished season 1 (Tara Grinstead) is the real-time investigation that actually moved a case. Monster: BTK is the current finished Monster season — produced in 2025, still the closed file to start in 2026 if you want that anthology.
Weekly file
One case per episode. No 10-hour arc. You listen, you stop. Casefile is the documentary default. The Deck is the unsolved ritual — each episode is one victim from the prison playing-card decks, built with investigators and families. Dateline is newsroom audio. Crime Junkie is the high-volume weekly; sourcing is tighter on some files than others.
Ethics filter (non-negotiable)
We keep shows that (1) cite public records or on-the-record interviews, (2) center victims and families instead of building a myth around the offender, and (3) label graphic material instead of using it as the hook. My Favorite Murder and Morbid stay off the featured cards on purpose. They are hang-first shows with a crime hook. If you already listen, keep them. They fail the public-record test as a first recommendation. Last Podcast on the Left fails the offender-glorification test for this page — dark comedy about killers is a different product.
